The CLEWATEC Helmholtz Innovation Lab was established to promote the development and application of innovations on sustainable water treatment. Working at the interface between the Helmholtz association of research centres and industrial partners in the water branch, CLEWATEC experts realize various bilateral and third-party funded projects related to different areas of water and wastewater management.

The core subjects of CLEWATEC include:

  • Development and testing of enhanced air/oxygen injection systems for increased energy efficiency, especially for biological wastewater treatment
  • Specialized instrumentation and digital tools for advanced characterization of mixing processes as well as the enhanced process control in sewer networks, activated sludge systems and and biogas digesters
  • Advanced water treatment processes for the degradation of persistent pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and PFAS, based on hydrodynamic cavitation and cold atmospheric plasma

Through long-term strategic collaborations with an extensive network that includes universities, wastewater treatment plant operators and technology suppliers, we identify the urgent problems of the industry and work together to develop and apply innovative solutions.
