The Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (INP) with its about 200 employees is one of the world’s leading research institutions for low-temperature plasmas. Our scientists and highly specialised staff from physics, biology, chemistry, medicine, pharmacy and engineering develop innovations for future markets interdisciplinary in close cooperation.

One focus of the research program “Agriculture, Bioeconomy and Environment” is the development of plasma-based processes for the degradation of biological and chemical pollutants in water, waste- and process water. Plasma processes are an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative that can be developed specifically for different requirements.

Another application field of plasma technology is disintegration and processing of biomass for energy and material recovery. Depending on application, processing technologies are needed that have to meet different requirements in terms of power input, thermal and mechanical stress and chemical conversion. Plasma sources can meet these requirements in a lot of applications
