New Task Force on Urban Water Resilience | 1st Session
New Task Force on Urban Water Resilience
From a long-term perspective, floods following storms are the natural disasters with the highest global economic damages. In the past five years alone, flood damages worldwide amounted to approximately 280 billion Euros. The flood disaster in July 2021 contributed to a total damage of 80 billion euros in Germany due to extreme weather events.
The flood disaster in Germany in 2021 demonstrated that the country possesses the know-how, technology, and experience to effectively respond to water-related disasters. The coordinated response of the German water industry, municipal utilities, and companies highlighted the importance of a rapid and efficient crisis management approach and emphasized the need for investments in preventive measures. This valuable expertise and the technologies developed by German companies can now be deployed internationally to assist other nations facing similar challenges. The export of German expertise and technology in the field of water management can help enhance the resilience of other countries to natural disasters while creating economic opportunities for German businesses.
Establishing a Task Force on urban water resilience allows us to identify and develop strategic objectives early, even when the market is not yet fully mature. This gives the German water industry a competitive advantage as we can leverage emerging opportunities.
