WATER 4.0

WATER 4.0 embraces the concepts of digitization and automation for resource-efficient, flexible and competitive water management. In analogy to the concept of Industry 4.0, WATER 4.0 borrows key features and concepts of this next industrial revolution, such as the interconnection of machines, processes, storage systems and equipment, smart grids, as well as the internet of things between each other, and applies them to a systemic water management context.

Central to the implementation of Water 4.0 are Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) as the drivers for optimal interconnection between virtual and physical water systems, whereas planning, construction and real-time operation are broadly assisted by software applications. This will enable intelligent interaction between water users (agriculture, industry and private households) and components of a sustainable water infrastructure in harmony with the environment and the water cycle, using a holistic approach along the value chain. Furthermore, Water 4.0 provides high transparency for water users, thus meeting current needs and offering opportunities for sustainable, creative jobs in the water industry.
