Joint Online Seminar by MEWF and GWP: New Water Technologies to Achieve Water Security in the Arab Region
The Arab world – the most water scarce region worldwide – confronts the triple threats of climate change, rising food and energy costs, and the economic crisis coupled with the current COVID-19 pandemic. All those threats are under fragile contexts of conflict and political instability in many Arab countries, exacerbating poverty, inequality and underdevelopment. All these crises have impacted socio-economic development and the vulnerability of the very precious water resources.
Innovation in water technology – from water supply (such as desalination and solar pumping) to industrial efficiency (such as more efficient water reuse) to agricultural technologies (such as crop protection and irrigation controls) – show huge potential for achieving water security in the Arab region. The German water industry is a world leader with 150 years of know-how in water supply and wastewater management. Thus, fostering cooperation between the Arab and German water sectors offers a promising solution.
